Hackers based in Perth are receiving compensation to infiltrate workplace systems following a series of data breaches in prominent companies nationwide. Spearheading this effort is Riaan Bronkhorst, a cybersecurity and privacy expert at RSM Australia, who oversees a group of cyberhackers adept at extracting sensitive data from enterprises. Referred to as “ethical hacking,” this methodology involves penetrating a company’s security measures to pinpoint vulnerabilities.

Bronkhorst emphasized the need for increased vigilance among Australians, highlighting the country’s inherent trustworthiness. He noted that for his team, infiltrating a company’s network might be as simple as requesting access from an unsuspecting staff member. Once inside, they abscond with laptops and surreptitiously plant USB sticks containing harmful viruses.

These strategies aim to address the growing threat of cyberattacks, which have resulted in the exposure of personal information from customers and employees of various companies such as Optus, Medibank, FMG, and Yakult, appearing on the dark web. According to Bronkhorst, the frequency of these attacks is nearly doubling annually, both in Australia and worldwide, indicating a persistent and escalating issue. Australia has become a particularly appealing target for hackers on a per capita basis, ranking seventh globally in terms of cybersecurity vulnerability.

At least 3.5 million email addresses were leaked last year alone.

To protect yourself online RSM advises users to be selective when logging into free wifi, watching what you post on social media and strengthening all your passwords.

“Stop being as trusting because not everyone walking next to you or letting you into the building is your friend,” Bronkhorst said.
